Open Source Means Choice Of Insurance

"The flexibility that open source permits – and which is taken away from you by proprietary vendors – is more important than ever." Very nice article by Simon Phipps: https://meshedinsights.com/2017/09/11/choice-of-insurance/

Labeling advantages like independence, (entrepreneurial) freedom, control, security, lower development costs, sustainability and many more as religion doesn't help to discuss Free Software in the cloud at all. https://www.infoworld.com/article/3217712/cloud-computing/the-cloud-could-drive-open-source-out-of-the-enterprise.html #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #cloud

Security record of open source and free software

"The Coverity report finds a slightly lower defect density of free software versus proprietary software; in the area of Web applications, however, the exact opposite result was found, which is essentially due to the security weakness of PHP."

The municipality of Tirana is serious about Free Software

It seems like one of the main reasons to migrate from ownCloud to Nextcloud was "the fact that Nextcloud is offering an enterprise product which is 100% open source".

It is really great to see that more and more companies and public authorities value freedom and independence. Software freedom is not just for community and home users, everyone deserves it and need it!

According to the article: "The migration to Nextcloud is an important event since this is the first municipality in South Eastern Europe which is putting serious efforts in avoiding proprietary software"

A film everybody should have seen: Revolution OS

"Linux wasn’t so much about being an operating system as it was about putting power in people’s hands. This isn’t so true anymore. Most of the few websites that remain are commercial endeavors that often confuse “software freedom” with the mere availability of source code and a free price tag. [..] The ideas behind the free software movement are now in danger of being reduced to merely a business model for managing software in the corporate world. [..] Without community, the free tech movement will disappear — of that, you can be certain."

German City of Göppingen builds on Free Software

"Contrary to common belief, free availability and low costs are not the main arguments for choosing open source," Rettberg said. "For me, the reliability of the software comes first. I can set up a Linux proxy server in half an hour and I won't have to come back to it for the next ten years."

What is the risk of using proprietary software for people who prefer not to?

May takeaway: Actions matters!
Research has shown that when communicating with people, what they see and how you communicate is ninety three percent of the impression you make. What you actually say to them is only seven percent. When giving a talk at a conference or a demo to a client, or communicating with family members in our everyday lives, using a proprietary application or a product or service that is obviously proprietary like an iPhone or Facebook will have far more impact than the words you say.

A study by the European Commission concludes that Free Software is a driving force for innovation in Europe:
The argument that established revenue models of the software industry were being eroded by open source software being available for free can no longer be upheld. Instead, there are many examples of successful OSS applications that are generally viewed as innovation drivers. Furthermore, working business models have been developed and have proved to be successful.
